HCA Healthcare operates 190 hospitals and about 2,600 ambulatory sites of care, as of June 30, 2026. 182 of those hospitals are in 18 US states, and Texas (55) and Florida (47) alone hold 56% of them.

This list of HCA hospitals by state is built for healthcare sales, marketing and partnership teams. It shows where every HCA hospital sits by state, the 50 largest HCA facilities, how buying decisions move through HCA’s groups and divisions, and which roles to contact first.

Key Takeaways

  1. HCA stands for Hospital Corporation of America. Founded in Nashville in 1968, it now operates as HCA Healthcare, the largest US hospital operator by hospital count.
  2. HCA runs 190 hospitals: 182 across 18 US states, plus about 2,600 ambulatory sites of care.
  3. Texas (55 hospitals) and Florida (47) hold 56% of HCA’s US hospitals and produce 51% of its revenue, making them the densest HCA territories.
  4. HCA buys at three levels: enterprise contracts through Nashville and its HealthTrust GPO, 15 regional divisions, and facility-level champions.
  5. Most HCA hospitals trade under regional brands such as Medical City, St. David’s and TriStar, so searching for “HCA” alone misses many of them.

What Does HCA Stand For? (Hospital Corporation of America)

HCA stands for Hospital Corporation of America. The company was founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1968 and now operates as HCA Healthcare, Inc., the largest hospital operator in the US by number of hospitals.

Hospital Corporation of America was started by Dr. Thomas F. Frist Sr., Dr. Thomas F. Frist Jr. and Jack C. Massey. It merged with Columbia Hospital Corporation in 1994 to form Columbia/HCA, later returned to the HCA name, and was taken private in 2006 before relisting on the New York Stock Exchange in 2011. It adopted the name HCA Healthcare in 2017.

HCA is a for-profit, investor-owned company (NYSE: HCA). It is also one of the largest integrated delivery networks (IDNs) in the US.

Becker’s 2026 ranking of the largest health systems puts HCA first with 190 hospitals. The next largest non-federal system, CommonSpirit Health, has 158 (Becker’s).

HCA’s footprint reaches well beyond hospitals. Its outpatient network includes surgery centers, freestanding ERs, urgent care centers, diagnostic and imaging centers, physician practices, home health and hospice. For the physician side of the network, see the list of HCA Physician Services Group doctors.

How HCA is Organized

HCA runs its US hospitals through three geographic groups, each split into regional divisions with their own leadership:

GroupHospitalsStates
American Group66Colorado, central Kansas, Louisiana, Texas
Atlantic Group64Florida, Georgia, northern Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina
National Group53Alaska, California, Idaho, Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia

Many HCA hospitals trade under regional brands rather than the HCA name. Examples include Medical City Healthcare (North Texas), St. David’s HealthCare (Austin), HCA Houston Healthcare, HCA Florida Healthcare, HCA HealthONE (Denver), TriStar Health (Tennessee), HCA Virginia and Mission Health (western North Carolina). Searching for “HCA” alone will miss many of them.

List of HCA Hospitals by Division

Each group contains five domestic divisions. Divisions are where most regional budgets, rollouts and leadership sit, so they are the most useful unit for territory planning.

Division structure per HCA’s operating reorganization; HCA’s 2026 filings still report the same three groups. HCA occasionally moves markets between divisions, so confirm current alignment in your data before assigning territories.

Here is where those 190 hospitals sit, state by state.

Why other lists show different numbers. Location trackers often count campuses, freestanding ERs or specialty facilities as separate hospitals. That is why some sources show 60–70+ HCA “hospitals” in Texas. Use HCA’s own filing for hospital counts, and a facility-level database for the sites underneath them.

The footprint also changes. Since 2023, HCA has sold three New Orleans hospitals to LCMC Health, Regional Medical Center in San Jose to Santa Clara County, and its Indiana hospital, while adding hospitals in Texas, Florida, Kansas and New Hampshire.

States without HCA hospitals. HCA has no hospitals in 32 states, including Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Washington and Alabama. It also no longer has a hospital in Indiana after selling its Terre Haute facility in 2025. Louisiana is down to one hospital, Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

Why Texas and Florida dominate the HCA hospitals list

Texas and Florida hold 102 of HCA’s 182 US hospitals. In 2025 they generated 59% of HCA’s admissions and 51% of its revenue: $21.0 billion from Texas and $17.9 billion from Florida (HCA 2025 annual report).

For vendors, this concentration matters in two ways. A Texas or Florida territory gives reps the densest cluster of HCA accounts anywhere. It also means HCA’s buying priorities are shaped by those states’ payer mix, Medicaid programs and population growth. To size the non-HCA market around them, see the top hospitals in Texas.

Tennessee is HCA’s home state, with 12 hospitals around Nashville, Chattanooga and the surrounding region. Virginia is its third-largest market by licensed beds; we cover it in detail in our list of HCA hospitals in Virginia.

State counts show where HCA operates. Revenue shows where to start.

Top 50 Largest HCA Hospitals by Net Patient Revenue

Methodist Hospital in San Antonio is HCA’s largest hospital. It ranks first among HCA hospitals by net patient revenue in Medicare cost report data, and Becker’s 2026 ranking of the largest US hospitals lists it at 811 beds (Becker’s). Ranking based on net patient revenue from Medicare cost report data. Hospitals HCA has since sold were removed. Revenue and bed counts change every year, so confirm current figures before you tier accounts.

What the list tells you. Texas and Florida each place 12 hospitals in the top 50, mirroring the state counts above. The top tier also includes regional referral hubs outside those two states, such as Mission Hospital, TriStar Centennial and Sunrise, which anchor their markets and influence nearby HCA facilities.

Quality recognition is another signal of where HCA invests. In 2026, 44 HCA hospitals made Healthgrades’ America’s 250 Best Hospitals list, and Mission Hospital, HCA HealthONE Sky Ridge and HCA Florida Kendall were named among America’s 50 Best (HCA via Business Wire).

Knowing which hospitals matter is half the job. The other half is knowing who signs.

How HCA Hospitals Make Buying Decisions

HCA buys at three levels: enterprise, division and facility. Most deals need support at more than one, and knowing which level owns your category saves months of selling to people who cannot sign.

LevelWho decidesWhat they controlHow to approach
Enterprise (Nashville)Corporate supply chain, IT and clinical leadershipNational supply contracts, equipment purchasing, IT and clinical systems, shared servicesExpect standardization, contract terms and system-wide evidence. Group purchasing runs through HealthTrust, HCA’s affiliated GPO.
DivisionDivision presidents, CFOs, CMOs, CNOsMarket strategy, service-line growth, physician recruitment, regional rolloutsShow impact across several hospitals in one market, not one site
FacilityHospital CEO, CFO, COO, CNO, department directors, medical staffLocal evaluations, value analysis, physician preference, adoptionBuild a clinical or operational champion who can carry the case upward

Two current factors shape HCA purchasing. HCA is rolling out a new EHR platform across its facilities, which affects integrations and timing for health IT vendors. Its 2026 filings also flag pressure from health insurance exchange coverage losses and Medicaid changes, so cost and efficiency arguments carry extra weight (HCA 10-K).

HealthTrust Performance Group, HCA’s affiliated group purchasing organization, runs supply chain contracting for HCA facilities, while Parallon, another HCA company, handles revenue cycle and shared services (HCA). If you sell supplies, devices or purchased services, expect HealthTrust’s product vetting to be part of the decision.

Who to Contact at HCA Hospitals

The right first contact depends on what you sell. Start with the role that owns the problem, then add the roles that approve the spend.

Marketer Action Items: Prioritizing HCA Accounts in 4 Steps

  • Match states and divisions to your coverage. Start where your reps already sell. In Texas and Florida, several HCA hospitals often share one metro, such as Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin or Miami.
  • Tier hospitals by size and service lines. Use net patient revenue, licensed beds, surgical and ER volume, and teaching or trauma status. A top-50 hospital usually justifies a dedicated account plan.
  • Check technology and change signals. Note each hospital’s EHR and current vendors, new construction or expansions, and recent acquisitions or divestitures.
  • Map the buying group before outreach. Pair a facility champion with division leadership and enterprise supply chain. Multi-thread from the start rather than after a stall.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pitching one hospital on a category HCA contracts nationally.
  • Treating regional brands such as Medical City or St. David’s as independent systems.
  • Working from outdated lists that still include hospitals HCA has sold.
  • Ignoring HCA’s surgery centers, freestanding ERs and clinics, where many purchases happen.

Track progress by tier: accounts reached, meetings by division, pipeline by HCA group and win rate in value analysis.

Map HCA’s buying group before you call. Ampliz Hospital Analytics profiles each HCA hospital with bed count, financial data, EHR vendor, GPO and IDN affiliations, and its executives by department and seniority. FAQs

How many HCA hospitals are there?

HCA Healthcare operated 190 hospitals as of June 30, 2026: 182 in the US. It also runs about 2,600 ambulatory sites of care.

What is the largest HCA hospital?

Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, is HCA’s largest hospital. It ranks first among HCA facilities by net patient revenue in Medicare cost report data, and Becker’s 2026 ranking of the largest US hospitals lists it at 811 beds. Mission Hospital in Asheville and Medical City Dallas rank next by revenue.

What states have HCA hospitals?

HCA has hospitals in 18 states: Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Utah, Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, California, Idaho, Kentucky, Alaska and Louisiana. Texas has the most, with 55, followed by Florida with 47. HCA has no hospitals in states such as Indiana, Michigan, Ohio or New York.

Is HCA a for-profit hospital system?

Yes. HCA Healthcare is a for-profit, publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker HCA. Its hospitals pay taxes, unlike the not-for-profit systems they compete with in most markets, and its scale lets it standardize purchasing across 190 hospitals through HealthTrust.

How can I reach decision-makers at HCA hospitals?

Start with the division and facility leaders who own your category, then verify contacts before outreach. Hospital websites list some executives but rarely give direct emails or phone numbers, and titles change often. Ampliz Executive Search provides verified emails and direct dials for hospital executives by title, department and facility, re-verified every 30 days, and returns your credit for any contact you flag as incorrect.

Conclusion

HCA Healthcare runs 190 hospitals, and 102 of its 182 US hospitals sit in Texas and Florida. Its largest facilities, led by Methodist Hospital, Mission Hospital and Medical City Dallas, are the natural first targets for most vendors. Selling into HCA works best when you know which level owns your category (enterprise, division or facility) and contact the right roles at each.
