About Heiko Ryll Studios

My youth was spent dreaming of being a performer, on stage every night getting lost in my craft and art. As I aged I realized th ... at it wasn’t the performance or praise I needed, it was the feeling of being transformed while I was performing. I found that with Graphic Design and art I could get lost in my work the same way. Over ten years of Graphic and Web design I stumbled upon Photography where I could combine the performances with the transformation of getting lost in creating. By understanding the feelings and emotions the performers go through I am able to capture the unique moments throughout a performance. I am heavily influenced by the Baroque painter Caravaggio and the Caravaggisti, I borrow the fine art painting techniques of Tenebrism and Chiaroscuro, using extreme contrasts of light and dark to heighten the dramatic effect in my photographs. After photographing live performances (music, dance, theatre, etc.) for the past few years I have transitioned from simply documenting the show to finding the other small performances within the performance. I need to show different angles. Find different, unique light. Find the story behind the obvious. This gives the viewer another experience than that of being at the performance and viewing from the audience. I put myself into difficult situations to force different creative decisions and push my tools. I apply this style to my fashion and hair photography, not trying to be different, but just to be myself, let my life and influences dictate how I visualize the final piece of work. I have patience. I welcome mistakes into my work everyday. I apply this to my studio work where I photograph hair and fashion, which has led to being a finalist in a major competition and work with some of the top brands in the hair industry. Show more
