Tim Macfarlane founded Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners in 1985 and Glass Light and Special Structures in 2012. During his 29 ye ... ars in practice he has been responsible for a wide range of challenging structures, where the structural and façade engineering are essential to the aesthetic, providing engineering design for arts, education, residential and public buildings in the UK and internationally. As well as working in conventional structural materials he has pioneered the use of structural glass in works ranging from small interventions to large cable-hung glass walls. The Yurakucho Glass canopy in Tokyo, the Audi Glass Cube in Riyadh and the TKTS Pavilion in Times Square New York have all attracted international acclaim and the glass engineering work on the Apple Flagship stores in New York, Chicago and San Francisco has set a standard for their stores worldwide. Alongside exploring the engineering challenges of glass Macfarlane led teams on major steel and concrete projects that brought the firm success with the UK’s Institution of Structural Engineers including the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence for the Pittsburgh Convention Centre and runner up for the same award in the previous year for the Kimmel Centre in Philadelphia The practice which is based in Clerkenwell, London with an affiliated office in Shanghai enjoys the challenge of engineering structures that are fit for purpose and derive their intelligence from the process of collaborative design between the client, the architect, the consultant team and the contractor.
