About American Gem Society and AGS Laboratories

The American Gem Society was founded in 1934 by a small group of leading jewelers. Their goal was to create an organization that ... could help protect the jewelry-buying public from fraud and false advertising. Today, we’re proud to say their vision has become a reality. Approximately 3,400 jewelers, retailers, suppliers, individual titleholders, and affiliates have joined the American Gem Society and have dedicated themselves to a mission of consumer protection, ethical business practices, and development and maintenance of superior gemological skills and knowledge. Only 1 in 20 jewelers has chosen to meet the exacting requirements necessary for membership. To join AGS, every member must go through a peer-reviewed application process followed by an annual recertification exam. This process ensures that every AGS member you meet is at the top of their game, and more importantly, each one has pledged to protect you, the consumer. Twenty years later, AGS Laboratories remains the only nonprofit diamond grading laboratory founded with the AGS mission of consumer protection. AGS Laboratories sets the highest standards for diamond grading in the industry. As a result, jewelry buyers have come to know AGS Laboratories as the most trusted name in diamond grading, while members of the jewelry industry know us as the leader in grading reports that provide consistency and accuracy based on science. It happens through our rigorously vetted cut grading system, grounded in the science of optical physics and our proprietary ray-tracing software. The result is the most comprehensive three-dimensional analysis in diamond grading, for virtually any shaped diamond, including round brilliant, princess, oval, emerald and cushion.
