s developed a unique Photo-bioreactor utilising light emitting diodes (LED’s) to drive photosynthesis in plants and algae. Algae can be used to abate significant concentrations of CO2 which is ABEL’s main focus, the algal biomass produced also has the potential to be developed into multiple products. Further analysis is needed to understand the value of this market and the product displacement that may well be created by the ABEL technology.
ABEL has prototype reactors built and in commercial trials with a number of industrial clients from a range of different industrial sectors, all of whom regard CO2 emissions as a serious commercial concern, industrial sectors that may benefit from the use of ABEL technology include;
o Steel and metals processing industry
o Power generation and utilities industries
o Cement and building materials
o Processing and chemical(s)
o Food and drink sector
The biomass will have application in the following markets;
o Marine Aquaculture food supplement/replacement
o Biofuel(s) such as biodiesel
o Biomass generation as a replacement for non-renewable(s) – co-firing
o Used to manufacture high value products such as oils (Omega-3), proteins carbohydrate fractions, and use in the biopolymer, green plastics market
